Year-end / New Year (roughly 29 Dec–3 Jan) sees shorter hours even when most days are not legal holidays.
New Year / Shōgatsu
1 Jan is the legal holiday; the festive window is about 31 Dec–3 Jan. Hatsumōde shrine crowds peak at Meiji Jingū, Sensō-ji, Fushimi Inari and similar.
- Book early: hotels and reserved Shinkansen sell out around the sanganichi
- Hours: konbini mostly open; department stores and restaurants often closed or short hours
- Queue patiently at shrines; follow local fireworks / temple notices
Setsubun (~3 Feb)
Bean-throwing before spring; busy at places like Naritasan or Yoshida Jinja. Not a national holiday.
Sapporo Snow Festival
76th edition, 4–11 Feb 2026 (Odori, Susukino, Tsudome). Book lodging months ahead; dress for serious cold. See the Sapporo guide.
Hinamatsuri (3 Mar)
Girls’ Day doll displays — not a holiday; nice cultural add-on in Kyoto and elsewhere.
Cherry blossom / hanami (~late Mar–Apr)
Tokyo often peaks late March–early April (forecasts shift yearly); Kyoto similar; Tohoku and Hokkaido later. Crowds at Ueno, Meguro River, Philosopher’s Path; book hotels early and go at weekday dawn for photos.
Golden Week 2026 (29 Apr–6 May)
Shōwa Day through Children’s Day. Constitution Day falls on Sunday, so 6 May is a substitute holiday; 2–6 May feels like five straight days off. One of the year’s busiest periods for domestic travel — book months ahead or shift a few days / pick quieter regions.
Tanabata
Nationwide often 7 Jul; Sendai’s big festival is 6–8 Aug (one of Tohoku’s three great festivals).
Gion Matsuri (Kyoto, all July)
Float processions traditionally 17 & 24 Jul; Yoiyama evenings beforehand are magical. Paid viewing seats sell ~two months out. Kyoto hotels tighten mid–late July — see the Kyoto guide.
Tenjin Matsuri (Osaka)
About 24–25 Jul: land and river processions plus fireworks. Expect crowds and road closures near the Ōkawa. Osaka guide.
Aomori Nebuta Matsuri
~2–7 Aug 2026: giant illuminated floats; you can rent a haneto costume and join. Shinkansen to Shin-Aomori / Aomori; book hotels early.
Obon
Not a legal holiday, but the year’s second-biggest homecoming rush. Most regions 13–16 Aug; some Kantō / Tōhoku areas use mid-July; Okinawa often follows the lunar calendar. Mountain Day (11 Aug) sits nearby in 2026. Reserve Shinkansen the day seats open.
Awa Odori (Tokushima)
~12–15 Aug 2026, overlapping Obon — Japan’s largest dance festival. Paid seats and free street viewing; transport pressure is high.
Silver Week 2026 (21–23 Sep)
Respect for the Aged (21st) and Autumnal Equinox (23rd) sandwich a citizens’ holiday on the 22nd — five-day holiday feel with weekends. Onsen and domestic trips fill up.
Jidai Matsuri (Kyoto, ~22 Oct)
Historical costume parade from Heian Jingū — one of Kyoto’s three great festivals. Often overlaps autumn foliage lodging demand.
Autumn foliage (~late Oct–Nov)
Kantō / Kansai often peak in November; Tōhoku earlier. Arashiyama, Nikkō and Kawaguchiko can rival hanami crowds, especially around Culture Day (3 Nov).
