Visas & transport tips

For Hong Kong travellers

Important: Rules change. Verify with Japan MOFA, the Consulate-General of Japan in Hong Kong, HK Immigration and your airline.

1. Visa (HKSAR passport)

HK readers: Per Japan MOFA public guidance, holders of a Hong Kong SAR passport with the right of abode in Hong Kong are generally visa-exempt for short-term stays (tourism, visiting relatives, business, etc.), commonly up to about 90 days. The exemption does not cover paid work. BNO passport holders with HK residence rights are also covered in related notes. Always re-check MOFA, the Consulate in Hong Kong, and HK Immigration before you fly.

2. Flights from Hong Kong

Common directs: Tokyo (NRT/HND), Osaka (KIX), Fukuoka, Sapporo (CTS), Nagoya (NGO), Okinawa (OKA). Flight time ~3.5–5 hours.

3. Rail, JR Pass & IC cards

See the JR Pass guide. Suica / Pasmo / ICOCA cover metro, many buses and convenience stores.

4. Airports & buses

Narita Express, HARUKA, limousine buses; night buses save a hotel but tire you out.

5. Money

Currency is JPY. Cards widely accepted in hotels and department stores; carry some cash for smaller spots.
