Michelin Guide Japan & how to book

Notable tables in Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto, plus booking channels for Hong Kong travellers. Not an official Michelin site.

What the symbols mean

Japan publishes regional guides (Tokyo; Kyoto & Osaka; and more) on different calendars. Always check the current city edition on the official site — do not treat third-party “forever star” lists as gospel.

How to reserve (HK travellers)

TableCheck

Strong English UI. Many bookings free; FastPass priority slots often ¥500–800/person (usually non-refundable). Restaurants set cancellation rules; card holds are common.

OMAKASE

Official Michelin partner for Tokyo / Kyoto / Osaka booking in many cases. English site. Typical ~¥390/seat system fee; some require prepaid courses; no-shows hurt.

Tabelog

English/Chinese booking pages available. System fee ~¥440/person (usually kept if you cancel). Covers izakaya through fine dining.

Hot Pepper Gourmet

Japanese-first; geared to residents in Japan. Useful for hours/phone; less ideal as a visitor default.

Official site / phone

Top sushi and kaiseki often take only their form or Japanese phone. Hotel concierges can help (ask about fees).

Walk-in vs booking

Ramen and casual spots = queues. Counter omakase / kaiseki = reserve. Lunch is usually easier and cheaper than dinner.
